We continue our work on BasketCheck and BetterChoice. Our apps aim to scan Swiss products and give nutritional feedback based on ingredient data. The app has 3 innovations: 1) evaluation purchase history long-term, 2) user-specific recommendations, 3) aggregating multiple product databases.
It is estimated that in the year 2030 our daily consumption surpasses 3’000 kcal per day - recommended are only 2´000 kcal per day. The consequences are dramatic: Obesity, diabetes & other diet-related illnesses take a significant toll on patients and the health-care system. Our project “betterCHoice” will be a digital nutrition coach aim-ing to increase transparency between retailers, food producers & consumers: Shoppers scan products & track their purchases and the app will in return interpret the user´s dieting and shopping history from a nutritional expert perspective: Depending on the user´s goal – e.g. to mitigate salt intake or low-carb diet – the app will return recommendations for a healthier nutrition: For example, by suggesting alternative products just in between two visits to the store. We want to observe how betterCHoice can change consumer attitudes, intention & behavior when it comes to healthier food choice.

You build a mobile application in which users will become able to scan product items (ingredient data retrieved from existing databases Trustbox, Codecheck, our own DB) and their nutritional goal (e.g. lower salt intake). The app will then compile a quantitative assessment of the user´s dietary history and recommend substitutes with a relative high, positive impact to the user. Finally your app shall log any changes in the consumption patterns over time. The Swiss Society for Nutrition will support the development of the recommendation system. As this entirely digital intervention is a novelty in the retail sector, you have the chance to become a co-author of a scientific paper in a top conference or journal.
You are familiar with developing an iOS or Android mobile app (ideally Xamarin Framework), experienced with API frameworks, interested to build the “FitBit” for nutritional health, capable of reading scientific articles, motivated to participate on current research
