Real-time Point cloud based human position estimation and tracking
Real-time pose estimation and tracking of humans is essential for many applications, and combining multiple sensors in particular vision based sensors increases opportunities to improve human motion tracking. Full body 3D pose reconstruction from single view images is difficult and suffers from the lack of 3D information, compared with two-dimensional or 3D pose estimation from multiple views. It is also very problematic to work with the image plane data since different body parts appear in different sizes and may be occluded depending on how the body is positioned relative to the camera.
Keywords: Human position estimation, point cloud data, estimate human height and skeletal parameters, track position, path and orientation using multiple sensors

Objectives of the project:
- Literature review on standardized human body models
- Literature review on Human tracking algorithms
- Implement the height and joint estimation approach
- Implement selected Human tracking method on real-time data
- Estimate the 3D location of human body
- Write an academic report summarizing and analyzing the results gathered in previous tasks.
This project can be defined as a bachelor Thesis or a project for a Master student. The duration of work on the project is 5 months and about 360 hours.
This work takes place within the framework of the MINDLab (https://www.zhaw.ch/de/engineering/institute-zentrum/ims/mindlab/), in which our research group focusses on the following main topics:
- AI-based human action recognition for low-level activity primitives and high-level behavioral action types
- Real-time AI-based human-robot contact detection during physical human-robot collaboration
- Developing intelligent non-verbal communication for physical human-robot collaboration
- Human-robot safety enhancement through profound analysis of dummy-robot collision
