Development of high-performance nozzles using ceramics additive manufacturing (AM)
In this project, the goal is to develop AM nozzles that are fabricated using additive manufacturing of ceramics. Specifically, the work aims to check the feasibility of fabricating complex-shaped parts such as multi-flow nozzles using additive manufacturing of ceramics.
Keywords: additive manufacturing, CAD
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a new and exciting field. The design freedom of AM allows realizing very complex geometries and rethinking the design and functionality of conventional parts. A very promising field is the area of fluidic and processing engineering. In this project, the goal is to develop AM nozzles that are fabricated using additive manufacturing of ceramics. Specifically, the work aims to check the feasibility of fabricating complex-shaped parts such as multi-flow nozzles using additive manufacturing of ceramics. The project fits you perfectly if you are interested in computer-aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing (AM), and want to do a hands-on project gaining practical experience with AM. The work is done as a collaboration between the Product Development Group Zurich (pd|z) of ETH Zurich and the High Performance Ceramics Group at EMPA Dübendorf.

The preliminary work packages include the following:
- Get familiar with the additive manufacturing of ceramics (e.g., fused deposition modeling (FDM))
[remote]
- Identify 3 promising applications of ceramic AM parts in the field of process engineering (e.g., nozzles for mixing multiple gasses)[remote]
- Create the CAD models of 3 parts with increasing design complexity such as multi-flow nozzles considering the manufacturing constraints of FDM printing of ceramics [remote]
- Fabricate the designed nozzles using the in-house printer and post-processing facilities (debinding and sintering equipment) located onsite at EMPA [~2-3 days per week onsite in Dübendorf at laboratories of EMPA]
- Analyze build process and quality of printed parts and optimize AM process accordingly
[onsite in Dübendorf at the laboratories of EMPA]
- Documentation of results (weekly & monthly meetings, midterm & final presentations, thesis)

- a high level of motivation, hands-on mentality, and able to solve problems independently - experience with CAD design in Siemens NX - experience with additive manufacturing is a plus - the desire to get to know the research work at PDZ and EMPA
