Web application for tracking micro-fabrication processes
The aim of this project is to develop a database and web-interface for the X-ray micro-fabrication team at PSI and ETHZ to track realized pieces, fabrication protocols and characterization of the products.
Keywords: database, web application, computer science
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. The team headed by Prof. Stampanoni develops advanced imaging techniques at the synchrotron and strives at the translation to medical devices in a multidisciplinary effort involving academia, industry and medical partners. Our micro-fabrication team produces X-ray optical components for different projects. Our development protocols target to structure silicon wafers and eventually fill the structures with gold to produce X-ray optical components. These protocols involve many processing steps that must carefully be documented to ensure quality and reproducibility. For this, we need a web-application that allows us to easily enter data and images through our mobile phone, while working in a clean room environment, where this data can be analyzed and searched conveniently on a PC in a web-interface. Since the group is expanding and new techniques have been developed over time, we need to organize our fabrication protocols in a functional database. The challenge is, that the commercial products do not fit our needs or would require complex customization.

You will interact with the fabrication team to familiarize about an X-ray grating and its typical fabrication protocol. You will see how the process chain is organized in our clean room and our laboratories, which characterization methods are used and which information are relevant to describe the quality of a single grating and to track back its fabrication story. Most of the processes are manual, some digital data can be manually extracted by tools, the data are usually recorded by the operator and need be collected and organized in a systematic way.
You will be asked to design a database for recording the process history of each single wafer. You will design a series of interconnected tables to store the process data and design an interface for the fabrication-team members to be used in a clean room environment. The goal is to realize a customized database to be able to securely store our data, to track back the story of a single grating, to produce a report on demand, to compare the process protocols, to analyze the performed characterizations, to localize where the grating is stored, to monitor the consumables consumption and the different projects milestones, to predict the timeline of a similar grating.
