3D Printing of Multifunctional Materials for Adaptive systems
3D printing comes with the advantages of customizing a product towards individual needs. More and more functional materials are being printed to increase the realm of 3D printing towards mainstream fabrication.
Keywords: 3D printing, multi-functional, adaptive, actuators, sensors
Various components in a product usually serve differ-ent functions like mechanical properties: strength and stiffness or compliance, toughness; with additional features like actuation, sensing, connections or protec-tion from environmental conditions. Like the natural systems where one or more properties are combined within a single component, the idea of this project is to develop materials possessing more than one function and then further tune the architecture of the printed structures to achieve additional properties. The materials used in the work are already designed.
• 3D printing different architectures
• Demonstrate a final multifunctional aerospace or automobile component
• Characterize the materials and designed archi-tectures for mechanical, piezoelectric and shape memory properties
