Trainee (index no. 8123-T2)
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on susta
A Wall Current Monitor (WCM) is presently in operation at SwissFEL. It is routinely used to determine the synchronization between the photocathode laser and the radio frequency of the RF gun. It is also used to measure the beam charge in both single bunch mode and 2-bunch mode at a repetition frequency of up to 100 Hz. In view of a possible upgrade of this device, a complete characterization of an equivalent circuit in both time and frequency domain is required.
For the Large Research Facilities Division we are looking for a

Wall Current Monitor for FEL linacs: experimental characterization of the devices and studies for possible improvements
**Your tasks**
Charge measurements can be performed in SwissFEL by means of a Faraday-Cup, Integrated-Current-Transformers and a Wall Current Monitor (WCM). Presently, a campaign of experimental characterization of these devices is ongoing in order to determine an absolute and reliable method of charge measurement. In the context of this research activity, you will contribute to the achievement of the final goal of an absolute charge measurement.
You will be involved in the experimental characterization of the WCM through measurements with the network analyzer, with the aim of determining the transfer function in the frequency domain and consequently in the time domain. The equivalent circuit will allow to study possible changes in the system in order to improve the transfer function between the electron beam and the time signal at the output of the device.
**Your profile**
- Student in physics, engineering, or a similar field (minimum 4 semesters)
- Interested in developing new instruments and measurement methods
- Open-minded and communicative person and you enjoy working in an international team
- You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis
**We offer**
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration.
This contract is limited to 3 months.
For further information, please contact Dr Gian Luca Orlandi, phone +41 56 310 47 39.
