3D-Morphology of the Roe Deer Endometrium during Diapause
Embryo implantation is a critical step for successful pregnancy establishment and requires a tight in-terplay between the embryo and the endometrium. Implantation failures pose a major problem for reproduction in both life stock and women. Yet, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms re-mains very limited. We therefore disentangle the components of embryo maternal communication in wildlife and life stock species as model organisms. One of our aims is to unravel the molecular mecha-nism of embryonic diapause, a temporary reduction of developmental pace.
The European roe deer was the species for which diapause was first described. In an ongoing project we characterized the localization of various extra cellular matrix components in the roe deer endome-trium. We now aim at complementing our results by analysing the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of the endometrium, with a particular focus on gland and vessel morphology. To this purpose, we will employ cutting-edge histological techniques including optical tissue clearing methods, light sheet and confocal microscopy and image analysis for digital reconstruction.
We are looking for an enthusiastic student with a biology background and good basic lab skills. Experi-ence with programming and/or image processing will be considered a plus.
