ALPA is a well established manufacturer of high end medium format cameras. In the past three years ALPA gained important experience in the development of additive manufactured (AM) end user products & accessories. One major area of interest is the field of adjustable fastening & support solutions for film professionals. ALPA is now looking forward to rethink existing products in that field with the help of AM in a research project with pd|z.

The goal of this project is to develop and test several support solutions for film professionals using AM. These could include for example shoulder rigs, rods or tripods. By exploiting the benefits of AM (e.g. functional integration, freedom of design), novel solutions with improved functionality (e.g. reduced assembly effort) shall be developed. The designs shall be evaluated regarding profitability, user feedback and functional tests. In the context of the development project, topics like generative design, flexible & adjustable structures and integration of AM with non-AM parts shall be explored as well. Based on the learnings of the case study, potentials of AM and its implementation in end-user applications shall be investigated.
The student will have the opportunity to work from ALPA’s office in Zurich.
