Particle Simulation of Electric Discharge Machining (EDM)
In essence, the created electric spark between the electrode and the workpiece in EDM generates an intense heat with temperatures reaching the range of 8000 to 12000 degrees Celsius. This temperature, strictly speaking, is enough to melt the materials of any kind. While the empirical investigation o

Within the course of this project, a simple EDM test case is picked where the experimental data is either available or will be carried out at IWF laboratories. The robust open-source meshfree software which has recently been developed at IWF, termed as “IWF_THERMAL”, is used for handling the thermal aspect occurring in the EDM process at hand.

The hope is, upon a successful incorporation of this numerical solver together with a set of physically meaningful assumptions, a good agreement against the experimental results will be achieved. Once the initial evaluation is performed to assess the functionality of particle methods for EDM, more sophisticated models will be taken into consideration. This will eventually lead to several novel contributions to be published in credible conferences and/or refereed journals.
