Semester Project: Upper Extremity Movement Classification
Within this project, you will be engaged in developing and evaluating a classification system for upper extremity movements performed during therapy sessions for stroke patients.
cereneo Center for Interdisciplinary Research (cefir) is a non-profit organization that conducts applied clinical research at the intersection of technology and neurorehabilitation. Uniquely positioned directly adjacent to the cereneo neurorehabilitation clinic, cefir plays a leading role in designing, evaluating, and applying novel approaches to tailor and optimize patients’ rehabilitation. Research projects are developed in constant interaction with patients, caregivers, and clinicians. Close ties to the major Swiss universities and university hospitals, together with international collaborations, ensure access to cutting-edge technology and research. cereneo is equipped with state-of-the-art neurorehabilitation research equipment, including a motion capture lab and a research MRI.

Within this project, you will be engaged in developing and evaluating a classification system for upper extremity movements performed during therapy sessions for stroke patients. During the supervised therapy sessions, patients will be equipped with a sensor network spanning the most relevant joints. The leading therapist will guide the patients through a repertoire of typical upper extremity movements that will be recorded with video and the sensors. Using the labelled video as a ground truth, your task will be to train a classifier based on the raw, derived, and fused signals from the sensor network. The goal is to achieve a high general classification accuracy, ie. no subject specific calibration and to be able to count the number of repetitions. Following the project, your classifier will be put into productive use. This will allow for a more fine-grained logging of therapy intensity and content for stroke rehabilitation. The complete system will be developed within an iterative design process, ensuring its suitability for use in a clinical environment.
