Design of Control Strategies for Preventing Fake News Spread
The last decades witnessed a radical change in the information system. The rise of social media drastically increased the volume and the speed of information flow. Social media provide fertile ground for confirmation bias and exacerbate the dissemination of disinformation, personal opinions and emotions against objective facts and data. People tend to look for information that confirms their pre existing beliefs. Also, the increase in the number of opinions that circulate and that overshadow facts explains why fake news tends to circulate longer. Relying on personal networks as a source of information limits the variety of information an individual is subject to. Moreover, social media apply filters that impose a bias on the type of information that an individual is exposed to. This leads to the formation of echo chambers made up of people sharing the same view and consuming the same type of information thus self-empowering their thinking. One of the most unwanted consequences of this polarization phenomenon is the division of the society so that each side has its own narrative and its own version of facts.
