The increasing trend of capturing 360° videos for entertainment activities opens new directions in virtual reality display. Adding stereoscopic sense into 360° content immerses us to perceive the sensation of depth between the foreground and background objects in the scene. Off the shelf consumer camera setups and display systems are mainly capable of producing 360° content for broadcasting and social media applications. However, for a teleoperation scenario where the operator is interactively manipulating the remote objects in the scene, there isn’t any existing 360° remote reality system which fulfils the low-delay requirements of the remote manipulation tasks.
In this framework, the candidate is expected to build and implement an end-to-end stereoscopic 360° video streaming system combined with virtual reality glasses as the displaying hardware. Furthermore, the candidate is going to investigate and improve the video compression techniques exploiting the human-perception limitations while performing the teleoperation.
