Long-term precipitation and glacier mass balance measurements at Silvrettagletscher
Continuous records of more than a century of precipitation and glacier mass balance exit at Silvrettagletscher. Accumulation is mainly influenced by precipitation. These simultaneous long-term records offer great potential to investigate systematic biases and glacier-climate interactions.

The initiation of mass balance measurements on Silvrettagletscher in the 1910s, was motivated by the interest of an improved understanding of the precipitation conditions in mountainous area. Measurements of both precipitation and mass balance on the glacier are carried out until today with the same technique. However, precipitation measurements with totalizers used in remote mountainous area are known to be prone to biases. Accumulation as a major component of glacier mass balance and precipitation are related quantities. Separate observations of these parameters offer the possibility to investigate long-term variations, the links between the climate and the response of the glacier as well as systematic measurement errors.
