Speed breeding in common beans
This thesis aims to develop a protocol for fast generation advance in climbing beans. Stress conditions (drought, removing the apex) and chemical treatments (hormones) will be tested to induce rapid flowering.
Common bean (_Phaseolus vulgaris_ L.) is the most important grain legume and protein source for human consumption worldwide. Beans are of particular importance for nutrition and income of smallholder farmers in the tropics. Climbing beans, a distinct subgroup of common beans, are reported to have significantly higher yields and positive effects on soil fertility compared to bush types. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in collaboration with the ETH wants to speed up bean breeding using growth cycle acceleration and genomic selection. Successful implementation of this strategy will allow to double the number of generations per year and to increase selection resulting in higher genetic gain.
