A Magnetic Catheter with Programmable Magnetizations
Magnetic catheters are promising technologies for minimally invasive surgeries due to the ability to remotely bend the tip using dynamic magnetic fields. Such catheters can be used for interventional therapies to treat cardiac arrhythmia and aneurysm.
Keywords: Magnetic catheter, medical robots, soft robots
Recently, many novel magnetic catheters are developed to overcome the limitation of traditional catheters. One example is the various stiffness catheter. The catheter is filled with low melting-point alloy that can switch from liquid to solid repeatedly using a heating wire. This innovation allows us to turn the stiffness of the catheter for complex catheter operations in a confined space.
However, up to now, almost all magnetic catheters cannot change its magnetization once fabricated, which put limitation for complex tip maneuvers. In this project, the student will develop prototypes of magnetic catheters that can dynamically switch the magnetization during the surgery to perform complex. A qualified candidate requires hands-on experiences with basic mechanical fabrication and processing. Experiences with Matlab and Comsol will be a plus.

The Goal of this project is to develop magnetic catheters with programmable magnetizations. The prototypes will be tested in our magnetic navigation system.
