Design and Characterisation of Soft Artificial Hearts
We are looking for students (particularly in an engineering discipline) to work toward designing various features of our soft artificial heart, and other aspects of the complete system (e.g. control system, electroics...)
Long term mechanical circulatory support systems are based on implantable nonpulsatile
turbodynamic flow pumps or external non-implantable pulsatile volume displacement
pumps. As part of the Zurich-Heart Project, an initiative of the "Hochschulmedizin
Zürich," a new concept of a fully implantable artificial heart based on a soft-machine
concept has been developed.
We are looking for students to support several different aspects of the artificial heart and anciliary system.
- **Characterisation of various artificial heart designs and features.** For example, characterising durability and functionality of novel sTAH designs.
- **Design and control of actuation systems.** We offer projects developing actuation and control systems for the sTAH

**The projects have various goals, which depend on your background and engagement period. Please reach out to discuss potential projects.**
Throughout your project you may be supported by several groups: the medical team of Prof.
Falk provides medical input and knowledge of the cardiovascular system, the team of Prof.
Stark provides input into sTAH design, and the team of Prof. Guzzella and Dr. Schmid Daners will supports the design and realization of actuation systems, alongside TAH characerisation

Overview of Mechatronics topics and study subjects. Identification of minimum 10 pertinent refereed articles or works in the literature in consultation with supervisor or instructor. After 4 weeks, submission of a 2-page proposal outlining the value, state-of-the art and study plan based on these articles. After feedback on the substance and technical writing by the instructor, project commences.
This course introduces students to the exciting world of Engineering Design research, which crosses disciplines and requires a variety of skills. Each student identifies a topic in Engineering Design for further investigation, either based on those proposed or a new, agreed topic.
The students get familiarized with the challenges of the fascinating and interdisciplinary field of Micro- and Nanosystems. They are introduced to the basics of independent non-experimental scientific research and are able to summarize and to present the results efficiently.
