Practice of ecosystem services valuation and mapping in the scientific literature.
Economic valuation is one of the many approaches possible to quantify and map ecosystem services are possible. Identifying and describing current state-of-the-art regarding the place of economic valuation in ecosystem services quantification and mapping should help to get a clear understanding of the contributions of such approaches and to highlight research gaps.
Keywords: Quantitative literature review; ecosystem services; grasslands
Description:
Nature provides important services to the society, such as food production, air quality regulation or water purification (Costanza et al. 1997, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005, Daily 1997). The concept of ecosystem services is nowadays an important component of the environmental management and its quantification and spatial representation are ways to implement it in decision making (Daily and Matson 2008). Such a review should be useful to set a future meta-study.
Methods:
Literature analysis with a quantitative component

Goal:
Goal of the thesis is to give a literature overview of the evaluation and mapping of ecosystem services in economic terms. To this end, a relevant pool of scientific articles should be identified, followed by a comprehensive literature review. This review should be based on the extraction of quantitative and qualitative information, related, for instance, to the type of evaluation, of ecosystem services, ecosystems, the location of the study site, or the spatial level of analysis. Finally the general trends of the literature should be discussed in order to identify gaps and contributions of the approach. A special consideration should be given to the study focusing on temperate grasslands.
