Image-Sequence Flow: Creating Animations from Large Sets of Images
Analyze large sets of images and find common patterns to flow from one image to the next while maintaining persistence of vision.
Keywords: Animations, images, similarity
Animation is a famously time-intensive medium. Many digital tools have been developed to make traditional methods quicker and more flexible, but some experimental techniques have been neglected. One such method is the technique of taking images and lining them up to create the illusion of movement, as in flipbooks. This ‘found footage’ method can create stunning results, but currently the process is entirely manual and extremely time consuming. A tool which could automatize such animations would not only speed up the process but also allow to create novel visualisations of large sets of images, uncover unseen patterns (colour, tone, forms) or recognize changes over time (on satellite imagery or a city skyline), among other artistic applications. Additionally, the tool could be sold as an extension to commercial application software

The goal is to analyze large sets of images and find common patterns to flow from one image to the next while maintaining persistence of vision. The algorithm should present a map of possible routes, deciding on the optimal order of the images based on the desired focus.
- Study existing methods and develop a model for the task.
- Work with artists to develop novel experimental results.
- Explore possibilities of integration with animation software and commercial release.
