Augmented Reality for User Guidance during Complex Maintenance Tasks
The project aims at the development and evaluation of an Augmented Reality (AR) application to guide operators through a complex maintenance procedure.
Keywords: augmented reality, Hololens 2, user guidance, SBB, ETH mobility initiative, maintenance, wearable support system, onboarding
Onboarding new employees for complex maintenance and repair tasks can take several month of supervision by experienced staff.
Augmented Reality (AR) is an upcoming technology that offers fundamentally new possibilities for guiding operators through complex problem solving tasks, hence greatly reducing the training time. This project aims at developing a new AR application to guide an operator through a multiple-step maintenance procedure. The project will be carried out in collaboration with SBB.

You will implement a user guidance for Microsoft Hololens 2 using Unity 3D game engine & C# and validate it in regular user tests. The final app version will be evaluated in a larger user study. A working prototype has previously been developed at pdz and will serve as a foundation and starting point for your work. As part of your project, you will also investigate remote support capabilities (real-time connection from remotely working expert to operator on site).

- enthusiasm for industrial applications - good programming skills (experience with C# is beneficial but not mandatory) - open personality, good communication skills - very structured and independent way of working
Success in product development depends heavily on the competence and skills of teams and individuals. This is why we dedicate our research to create knowledge that enables the value-adding use of new technologies - and to make this knowledge tangible and teachable. Industrial and clinical needs are the driving forces for our interdisciplinary research. Our work is distinguished by a variety of methods, ranging from simulation to validation of real applications. Our research changes the way we develop products, and our expertise changes the way we create sustainable value.
