Master Thesis on Microgel-Reinforced Hydrogels at EPFL, Lausanne
We are currently looking for a highly motivated Master Thesis student in Material Science starting early 2021 in the Soft Materials Laboratory SMaL at EPFL in Lausanne. In this challenging project, we aim at elucidating how the size, arrangement, and volume fraction of microgels influences the mechanical properties of macroscopic microgel-reinforced hydrogels. You will use microfluidic tools to fabricate microparticles from drop templates to reinforce macroscopic hydrogel samples and test their mechanical properties using tensile tests. We will then relate obtained experimental data to a theoretical framework to understand observed stiffening and toughening behavior of the embedded microgels.
