Masterthesis Ultrafast Electron Microscopy

You would help us build an ultrafast electron microscope. The used pump-probe scheme consists of a femtosecond laser pulse to excite a sample and a laser induced electron pulse to probe surface carrier dynamics.

Keywords: Solid State Physics, Ultrafast, Laser, Pulsed, Electrons, Relativistic, Surface Plasmon Polaritons, High Voltage, Experimental

  • Once finished the instrument should be able to observe surface carrier dynamics on semiconductors and potential landscapes. If this machine should be of use to develop the chips of the future we aim for some nm spacial and 1 ps temporal resolution. The whole setup is roughly working at this point but not efficiently enough.

  • During the thesis you would help develop more efficient electron emitters to produce sub ps electron pulses, get to know how surface plasmon polaritons could help us in this, work on electronics for quicker data acquisition, learn about electron optics, simulation tools, laser optics and solid state dynamics of surfaces. All in all we hope to offer a good mix between handcraft, theory, programming and measuring.
