Game-theoretic models of opinion dynamics
Mathematical modeling plays an important role in studying social systems. Social interactions are usually highly stochastic and driven by individuals' subjective incentives. This project aims to mathematically model opinion dynamics in the framework of game theory with stochastic best responses.
Keywords: opinion dynamics, social networks, game theory, stochastic process
Public opinion formation processes in our modern society face unprecedented challenges such as opinion polarization, echo chambers, and the spreading of misinformation. Mathematical modeling of opinion dynamics plays a critical role in gaining reliable and verifiable understandings of the microscopic mechanisms behind various empirically observed macroscopic sociological phenomena. From the system and control perspective, dynamical processes on social networks can be modeled as networked multi-agent systems. Different from many other such systems in natural or engineering sciences, individuals' behavior in social systems has high randomness and is driven by subjective incentives. To capture these prominent features, in this project, we aim to model opinion dynamics from the perspective of network games and stochastic best-response dynamics.

1) We aim to propose a mathematical model of opinion dynamics based on network games with stochastic responses. Such a model is supposed to explain certain interesting macroscopic sociological phenomena;
2)We plan to rigorously analyze the dynamical behavior of the proposed model, such as the fixed points, the convergence property, and the phase-transition behavior.
