Research Assistant – AI and Data Management for a Swiss National Science Foundation Project at the University of Zurich
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation under the Spark program, the project titled “Triage against the Machine: Can Artificial Intelligence Reason Deliberatively?”, aims to assess AI’s ability to perform deliberative reasoning in alignment with human standards, using large language models (LLMs) and the Deliberative Reason Index (DRI). We seek a technically skilled person to help build infrastructure that will support the collection, analysis, and management of large-scale data as well as ensure the security and quality of data handling.
Dr. Francesco Veri (Department of Political Science, and Centre for Democracy Studies, University of Zurich) invites applications for a Research Assistant position starting December 1, 2024 (or upon agreement).
The position is situated in the project “Triage against the Machine: Can Artificial Intelligence reason deliberatively?” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
The project requires at least one person with a BA/MA or currently enrolled in BA/MA program at a Swiss University, in computer science, data analysis or a related field, with a strong understanding of LLMs, including experience in data management and analytical frameworks associated with AI model development and evaluation.
**Applicants for this position should meet the following requirements:**
- Technical Skills: bachelor or master’s degree or currently enrolled in BA/MA program at a Swiss University in computer science, data analysis or related fields with expertise in database management, data preprocessing, and programming (e.g., R or Python).
- Analytical Skills: Familiarity with analytical frameworks, machine learning, or AI methodologies.
**Workload**
An 80% workload position for 12 months, with the option to divide the workload among multiple candidates.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Data Collection and Quality Control: Establish methods to collect, preprocess, and cleanse data from LLMs, checking reliability and removing irrelevant information to ensure its suitability for analysis.
- Tool Integration and Software Development: Set up, manage, and develop custom software and analytical tools (e.g., R or Python) to process data and support comprehensive analysis, ensuring reproducible research methods.
- Security and Compliance: Implement robust security protocols to protect sensitive information and manage compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- System Maintenance: Perform regular checks and updates on the data systems to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the project.
- Database Design and Implementation: Develop and maintain a secure database architecture for large datasets, ensuring efficient data storage, access, and management.
