Usability of a novel cueing device for patients with Parkinson`s disease

Hypokinetic gait disorder and Freezing of Gait are frequent symptoms in the advanced stage of Parkinson’s disease. They impair quality of life and significantly increase the risk of falls. External movement pacemakers have been developed to improve gait and avert FOG by cueing strategies. We developed a smart, small and lightweight, easy-to-handle wearable tactile cueing device, consisting of a control unit, two pulse generators and a battery-driven power supply (see overview figure). The device is programmed via a GUI.
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate (i) the usability and (ii) the acceptance of the medical device (see figure) in a clinical setting.
The secondary objective is to measure (iii) the effects of the TCD on hypokinetic gait and FOG in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
All interventions are performed at the Rehaklinik Zihlschlacht at its Parkinson Center.
