Master Thesis: Measuring Nutritional Literacy in USA/DE/CH (Online Survey or App)
This project aims to build the first cross-country online assessment of nutritional literacy (i.e. test of ability to identify and make health food choices). Your online survey or app will assess nutritional literacy in US/DE/CH and contribute towards future health app development.
In 2014 over 600 million adults and 42 million children were affected by obesity with growth rates of epidemic proportions. Nutritional education programs have been proposed to counter the trend of excessive energy intake, identified as the main driver of overweight. Still, due to lack of resources, only a small part of society can be included in these personnel-intensive programs. Nutritional Health Apps (Nutritional mHealth) in nutritional education have the potential to overcome these limitations, but still suffer under low end-user acceptance and interaction rates. In order to address these issues, we aim to implement an online tool to learn / predict a user’s nutritional literacy based on survey input and gamification. Through knowing the nutritional literacy (i.e. the level of knowledge and ability to identify, choose and prepare healthy food items), nutritional health apps can address user needs better in the future.
**The Thesis**
You develop a simple online survey or app where users are asked nutrition related questions (based on existing apps and questionnaires). We will use existing frameworks (NLAI Nutritional Literacy Assessment Indicator, others) and existing online tools (e.g. our mobile app frameworks or Surveymonkey, etc.). You compare different samples (e.g. Germany, Switzerland, USA) and differences in existing nutritional literacy, e.g. based on socio-demographic backgrounds. There are two main goals: proof of concept and investigation of empirical distribution of nutritional literacy. You have the chance to become a co-author of a scientific paper in a conference or journal. The thesis can be written in English or German.
**You are:**
• willing to build or learn how to build and release a simple web based survey or app
• able to cooperate with a research partner for the field experiment
• interested on nutrition and health
• capable of reading scientific articles
• motivated to participate on current research
We are looking forward to hearing from you!
