Using super-resolution microscopy to unravel new insights into the treatment of haemophilia A patients
Are you interested in a Master Thesis at the Laboratory of Applied Mechanobiology at ETH Zurich? This interdisciplinary six month project in the field of coagulation biology in the context of Haemophilia A is part of a collaboration with a pharmaceutical industry partner.
Keywords: Super-Resolution Microscopy
Coagulation Biology
Haemophilia A
Biomedical Engineering
This joint project focuses on coagulation biology in the context of Haemophilia A. Haemophilia A is a genetic disorder caused by missing or defective blood clotting factor VIII. This results in a spectrum of bleeding events in affected individuals which differ in frequency and severity.
Haemophilia A is treated with prophylactic or on demand infusions of plasma-derived or recombinant
FVIII products. Similar to plasma-derived FVIII products, recombinant FVIII products provide bleeding protection by substitution of missing FVIII during the course of the coagulation cascade. However different treatment outcomes in patients may vary dependent on the used recombinant FVIII product. This suggests that different intrinsic molecular characteristic among the recombinant FVIII products exists.

By developing tailored in vitro model systems in combination with high-resolution quantitative imaging, we want to identify novel mechanisms between recombinant FVIII products and the hemostatic system. In future, this could opens up new avenues in Haemophilia A treatment.
**What can you expect from the project:**
- Interdisciplinary environment, which will expose you to various techniques such as high-resolution microscopy, primary human cell culture handling, surface chemistry modification and functionalization, microfabrication and microfluidics. Check also our website to have an idea of the diverse work that is being done in our lab. https://appliedmechanobio.ethz.ch/.
- Collaboration and communication with engineers, bioengineers, medical doctors and industry partners.
**What is your background:**
- Enrolled in a Master degree program in biology, biological sciences, bioengineering or similar topic.
- First experience in cell culture handling, optical microscopy and optional microfluidics
- Open mindset and enthusiasm for science
**Starting date:**
As soon as possible
