Micro- and Nano-engineering for Heat Transfer Enhancement
In order to achieve high efficiency of condensation, it is important to enhance the phase change heat transfer through dropwise condensation, rather than filmwise, and to have a durable surface on which this phenomenon occurs. High thermal conductivity of the involved materials is also required.
In the first stage, we aim to fabricate novel materials for enhancing condensation heat transfer. Fabrication will involve surface micro- and nano-engineering techniques, as well as organic coating deposition methods, that are scalable and directly relevant to industry. Such techniques include spray coating, chemical etching, chemical vapour deposition, plasma treatments, etc.
In the second stage, we aim to characterise the developed materials in terms of condensation/ wettability, durability and heat transfer. This characterisation will be performed with experimental setups that we have developed at LTNT for evaluating heat transfer under various flow conditions, and sophisticated high-speed imaging techniques for analysing in detail the surface wetting phenomena.
Overall, this experimental project is ideal for students who want to gain experience in industry-relevant heat transfer processes and materials.
