Medical device development for root canal treatment in a Medtech startup
Do you look for a internship to get your first working experience? Would you like to work in a young, fast-moving startup in a highly-diverse, motivated team? Would you like to do lab work, which will turn into a real product to improve peoples life? Then contact us!
Lumendo is a Medtech startup and a spin-off from ETH Zürich and EPFL Lausanne. Our goal is to improve the efficiency and success rate of dental root canal treatments with a disruptive cleaning technology and a novel, light-activated root canal filling material, thus helping people to keep their natural teeth longer. We have a team of 8 motivated scientists and engineers and recently closed our seed financing round.
**Project description**
Root-canal treatments are among the most difficult procedures in dentistry. This often leads to a failure of the treatment and a reinfection of the tooth. Lumendo’s cleaning device employs cavitation effects to clean root canals more efficiently and thoroughly. In a recent clinical study, we showed that the device can be used safely in patients.
The goal of this project is the development of a scalable industrial prototype. Based on user need and risk analysis, you will build first prototypes that incorporates all features and safety mechanisms. This encompasses the development of the system, sourcing of components, assembly, and programming. By systematic testing, evaluation, and improvement you will reach a minimal viable product (MVP). Together with our lead engineer, you will evaluate the solution, source suppliers for the individual components and define the final system architecture.
**Your tasks**
- Develop and fabricate functioning prototypes as models for the industrialization
- Implement and test different sensors to find MVP fulfilling safety and performance requirements
- Perform risk assessments and implement mitigations
- Hands-on testing of prototypes in combination with different tissue models
- Design of a mechanical parts and selection of appropriate components
- Identify suitable suppliers and manufacturing partners
- Teamwork with our development team as well as with experienced clinicians
**Your profile**
- Bachelor/ Master student in mechanical, electrical, biomedical engineering
- Experience in prototyping, electronics, control, programming, and CAD
- Interested in medical devices
- Highly motivated and responsible; outgoing and hands-on personality
- Independent and well-organized working style
**What we offer**
- A work that matters and can help improve people’s life.
- A startup environment, giving you high responsibility and lots of freedom.
- A young, entrepreneurial, and motivated team.
- Interaction with all stakeholders (engineers, clinicians, regulatory) relevant for medical device development.
