Augmented Reality based Assembling Guidance Using Microsoft HoloLens
The goal of this project is to develop a system to support assembly workers by means of visual assembly guidance using augmented reality.
Keywords: Augmented Reality, Computer Vision, Robotics, C++
The goal of this project is to develop a system that guides a worker while doing the wiring in an electrical cabinet. Using augmented reality the worker should be presented the start and end point as well as the wire path. An assembly wizard will display the wires in the correct sequence in a way that the worker does not need to read any wiring diagram. The target of such a system is to remove any written work instructions, to make complex assembly tasks accessible to unskilled workers and to ensure consistent quality. Within this project, we aim at deploying this technology on a Microsoft HoloLens or a suitable alternative device that will be adapted to our needs. A workflow should be implemented to test the usability of augmented reality in a workaday life. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Komax AG, a leading manufacturer of wire processing machines.

- Evaluate the suitability of Microsoft HoloLens as a visual guidance system and, if necessary, identify potential alternatives (preferably commercially available).
- Implement an overlay of virtual images with the real image.
- Test how stable the superposed image is when moving the guidance device in space.
- Implement an Interface with the existing “Digital Lean Wiring” system by Komax.

- Strong programming experience ideally in C+ (having written several thousand lines of code).
- Strong understanding of Computer Vision
- Experience in Software Development on Windows desirable (VisualStudio, Windows SDK, …).
- Experience in Unity Game Engine.
- Interest in implementing a “real world” use case for augmented reality guiding systems.
- Interest in collaboration with an industry partner.
