Trainee
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2000 people.
For the particle accelerator control embedded computers populated with FPGA’s are used in a large number and are the backbone of the SwissFEL control system CPU’s. These boards have FMC (FPGA Mezzanine Cards) connected for e.g runnning data aqcuisition of analog signals. Then further application depedant processing is done in FPGA or CPU, which are interconnected with PCI Express. The cards also run the control system interface on top of an embedded Linux distribution.
For the large research facilities department we are looking for a
The major task of the work is migration of an embedded bootloader to a recent version of the same product. All the special adaptions such as the board initialization, FPGA bitstream configuration over network or the communication with the DHCP server must be migrated and tested before the production systems can be upgraded. The network boot process needs special attendance, where debugging for the newly available PHY driver as well as the DHCP configuration process has to be implemented. You will learn to use network monitoring tools such as WireShark. Additional new features such as I2C communication to on-board components or remote FPGA firmware upgrade are planned.
