Student Assistant Position in Computer Science/NLP (20-30%)
Professors Fabrizio Gilardi and Karsten Donnay from the University of Zurich are seeking a Student Assistant for a project on improving online public discourse, starting November 1, 2024 (or upon agreement). This SNSF-funded project, in collaboration with UCL and ETH Zurich, aims to develop computational methods for detecting harmful and constructive content online, using machine learning and NLP tools. The assistant will support tasks like deploying classifiers and integrating them into existing systems. The position is ideal for senior BA/MA computer science students with relevant technical skills.
Keywords: NLP, LLMs, Machine Learning
Prof. Fabrizio Gilardi and Prof. Karsten Donnay (Department of Political Science, University of Zurich) invite applications for a Student Assistant position starting November 1, 2024 (or upon agreement). The position is situated in the project “Improving the Quality of Online Public Discourse” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), conducted in collaboration with Prof. Gloria Gennaro (University College London) and Prof. Dominik Hangartner (ETH Zurich).
This position is part of a large-scale, collaborative research project that investigates how the quality of online public discourse can be improved. The project will develop computational methods for the semi-automatic detection of both harmful and constructive content and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions against toxicity and for promoting constructive dialogue. This student assistant position will support all NLP and machine learning-related aspects of the project, in particular with regard to detection and measurement of harmful/constructive discourse. This includes implementing and deploying state-of-the-art classifier solutions and integrating them with our existing pipeline. For this position, we are specifically looking for computer science students interested in applying their technical skills in an interdisciplinary and highly policy-relevant project. The position is ideal for more senior BA or MA students with a computer science (or comparable) background. The position is a starting point for all those students, who would like to get hands-on experience in academic research projects.
Applicants for this position should meet the following requirements
- Currently enrolled in a computer science (or comparable) BA/MA program at a Swiss University
- Proficiency in server management, database administration (PostgreSQL)
- Experience with Docker for containerization and deployment of model APIs
- Familiarity with essential Python packages (PyTorch, scikit-learn, pandas, numpy)
- Experience with additional frameworks such as TensorFlow, spaCy, Apache Spark is a plus
- Prior experience working with (open source or proprietary) LLMs is a plus
- Ability to work both independently and in a team
If you are interested in applying for this position, please submit your application via the Department’s job portal. Please include your motivation letter, CV, proof of academic performance and a seminar / research paper or your BA thesis as a single PDF. The application can be found here: https://www.ipz.uzh.ch/de/ueber-uns/offene-stellen//2024-Research-Assistant-Computer-Science-NLP.html
Review of applications will begin after October 13, 2024, and continue until the position is filled. Interviews will likely take place in the second half of October (and can be done virtually, if need be).
