Right or Wrong? If I say I will use a technology, I will do so in the future.
Is there an intention-behavior gap in information systems research? A meta-analysis based on evidence from technology acceptance studies
Keywords: Information Systems, Technology Acceptance, Intentions, Behavior, Meta-Analysis
With the ongoing pervasion of smartphones and low-cost sensors, personal information systems are more popular then ever. The success of such technologies is in large parts dependent on its adoption by prospect users.
In the last decades, IS research on technology adoption and diffusion has developed many theoretical frameworks based on a simple mechanism: attitudes influence an usage intention which in turn is then translated into use behavior. Research takes it for granted that a stated intention will translate automatically into usage behavior. But do people really do what they intend to do?
At this point and with regard to other research domains like psychology and marketing, we question the predictive reliability of an usage intention in regard to actual behavior.

You get
• access to a meta analysis dataset of studies all studying technology adoption and diffusion phenomena in real-life
• a rough TODO agenda (research gap and research questions are already defined to a large degree)
• insights into a research in practice
• to work in a young and dynamic team
• location flexibility (ETH WEV building or remote)
You are expected to
• extract the relationship from previous studies
• analyze the relationship with statistical methods
• frame the findings in the context of the often discussed intention-behavior gap
• summarize the method and your findings in a scientific article for a conference or a journal (ca. 10 pages)
You should bring
• study course related to information systems, management, or behavioral sciences (psychology, sociology)
• interest in the topic technology acceptance
• interest in human behavior
• analytical skills
• ability to work in a structured and very precise way
• team work skills
