Virtual avatar for home therapy: investigating the effect of the visual rendering on motor response
Our lab is developing an avatar for motion guidance during post-stroke home therapy. This project aims at investigating the impact of the visual rendering of the avatar, on the motor response of the subjects.
Keywords: Virtual reality; human motion modeling, post-stroke home therapy
Long-term therapy training is known to be beneficial for stroke patients. However, therapy options are scarce outside clinical environments and therapy dose tends to drastically decrease when patients go back home. Developing home therapy solutions is thus crucial. In this context, our lab is investigating the use of an avatar therapist, which guides patient's motions during training at home, in virtual reality environment. The viewing of the avatar and its (un)realistic features may influence the patient's motor response and how the visual feedback is integrated.

This project aims at evaluating the effect of the visual rendering of the avatar (e.g., minimalist stick representation or fine-tuned human shape) on the motor behaviour of the subjects.

- design different visual renderings for the avatar on Unity
- establish a protocol to analyze the effects of the rendering on the motor response
- conduct the study with healthy participants, collect and analyze the corresponding data
