Digital twins of building energy systems
The Urban Energy System Laboratory at Empa has openings for semester projects in real-time simulation of building energy systems using digital twins.

Given the growing interest in real-time sensing and operation of building energy systems, transitioning from offline to online simulation is inevitable. During this semester project, students will work with DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus tools and create a co-simulation model that can run in real-time. The studied model is based on the Vision Wood ( https://www.empa.ch/web/nest/visionwood ) unit at NEST, Empa. Students will work with actual measurements of building energy consumption and indoor air quality. They will also receive coaching on interpreting and modifying EnergyPlus files and gain expertise in generating/executing Functional Mockup Units for real-time simulation.( https://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/fmu/EnergyPlus/export/index.html ).
