Rising Temperature Impacts on Cooling Demand and Energy System Planning in Accra due to Climate Change

This project presents the opportunity to collaborate with climate change and power system scientists in Ghana in order to assess the impacts of rising temperature and heatwave events due to climate change on cooling demand and energy planning for the city of Accra. You will have the opportunity to design cooling demand scenarios for Accra in order to model impacts on long-term energy system planning and identify resilience solutions for the city using an optimization model.

Keywords: energy system modeling and analysis; optimization modeling; urban energy; climate change impacts (rising temperatures and heatwaves) on energy planning

  • TASKS / GOALS  Work together with our climate change and power systems research partners in Ghana (at KNUST and UENR) to estimate current and future cooling demand under rising temperatures and heatwave events in Accra  Design long-term energy scenarios for Accra reflecting cooling demands under different climate change scenarios  Model scenarios using an energy system model of Accra to determine energy planning impacts and identify solutions to improve resilience under climate change THESIS TYPE AND DURATION  Master thesis  Duration: one semester – start/end dates flexible REQUIREMENTS - Language: English - Knowledge of energy systems, preferably also some experience with optimization models - Strong academic record - Some programming knowledge (e.g., using MATLAB, Python, etc.) - Self-motivated, independent, and conscientious worker with strong critical thinking skills - Please apply with your CV, academic transcripts, and cover letter
