Machine Learning for Avalanche Mapping in optical satellite imagery
Automatically mapping avalanche events from high resolution optical satellite imagery could become a key application for avalanche warning. We will develop a novel deep learning approach for avalanche mapping from space.
We captured two large avalanche periods in the winters 2018 and 2019 with SPOT6 satellite imagery (1.5 m spatial resolution) and manually mapped more than 19'000 individual avalanche outlines. This unique dataset will be the basis to develop a novel deep learning algorithm to automatically detect and map snow avalanches from optical satellite imagery. We are looking for a highly motivated student with a BSc degree in a relevant field and a strong background in deep learning and preferably in satellite remote sensing and natural hazards. The successful applicant has the ability to work independently and is dedicated to the topic. The workplace will be either SLF in Davos or the EcoVision Lab at ETH Zurich, depending on the candidate's preferences.
