Responsible Robotics and AI (TU Delft Summer School)
APPLICATION CLOSED - 27 - 30 August, 2017. Given the rapid pace of robotics innovation and the potential ethical issues that may result, technological development must be grounded in an awareness of the related societal and ethical issues.
Given the rapid pace of robotics innovation and the potential ethical issues that may result, technological development must be grounded in an awareness of the related societal and ethical issues. Moreover, with countries around the world engaging in deliberations concerning the type of policies and regulations to put in place it is paramount that such issues be addressed now. This has prompted the TU Delft to organize an IDEA-League summer school on Responsible Robotics and AI.
The nascent field of ‘Responsible Robotics’ is concerned with the moral choices that are made by people in the different stages of the life cycle of robotics and AI technologies; from the moment of idea generation and onwards throughout the design process to development, deployment and regulation. The domain of Responsible Robotics is an increasingly growing scholarly field as part of the European agenda on Responsible Research and Innovation. In this Summer school you will become acquainted with the basics underpinning the concept of responsible robotics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to explore the relevance and applicability of responsible robotics across a variety of disciplines.
Students will engage in a variety of lectures together and will have the opportunity to run their own individual project (or in small groups depending on the topic). The lectures will cover the following topics broadly; ethics and AI, law and robotics, philosophy and robotics, intro to robot ethics, and meaningful human control. In addition, students will participate in a movie night to stimulate a discussion of the role of popular culture on our expectations of robots.
