Robust Time-Reversal Focusing of Lamb Waves in a Plate

  • ETH Zurich
  • Exploration and Environmental Geophysics

Time reversal focusing is the process of back propagating wavefields to focus their energy in time and space, which has abundant practical applications. In this project, we will investigate, through experiments and simulations, the robustness of time-reversal focusing of waves in a thin plate.

Measuring sound with light

  • ETH Zurich
  • Exploration and Environmental Geophysics

Sound waves propagating through a medium cause a tiny change in the refractive index of the medium, which can be detected with a laser-doppler vibrometer. In that way, the waves can be made "visible". We would like to investigate this exciting measurement technique in our laboratory.

Acoustic cloaking and holography in the laboratory

  • ETH Zurich
  • Exploration and Environmental Geophysics

In this thesis project we aim at demonstrating and optimizing acoustic invisibility and acoustic illusions in laboratory experiments. We achieve this with a large number of secondary microphones and loudspeakers that record and emit secondary soundfields that create the desired effect.
