Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors for bodily fluid biomarkers

  • ETH Zurich
  • Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology Lab

The project is devoted to development of new generation sensors for human bodily fluid biomarkers. The main aim is development of compact and non-invasive modified electrodes for electrochemical sensing of these important compounds.

Conductive polymer pattern deposition for smart textile applications

  • ETH Zurich
  • Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology Lab

The goal of the project is to develop a simple and versatile method for production of robust conductive patterns on textile via deposition of conductive polymers. This technology will allow further development of wearable electronics for biomedical applications.

Stretchable, conductive polymer fibers of varying stiffness for auxetic strain sensors

  • ETH Zurich
  • Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology Lab

It was recently shown that helical auxetic structure allows one to achieve strain sensitive fibres with high sensitivity. Rigidity/stiffness of components of these sensors also plays a role in sensitivity to strain. To further improve our recently published textile strain sensing modality—helical auxetic yarn capacitive sensors—we are seeking a thesis/project student to develop a conductive composite formulation and process to wet-spin fibres of different stiffnesses. Employed as sensors, the effect of stiffness on sensitivity can be tested experimentally. The outcome of this project will further the development of highly sensitive, scalable textile strain sensors.

Diaxxo (diaxxo.com) is a start-up originated at ETH Zürich, where in the past 4 years we have developed and prototyped an innovative Point-of-Care Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) device. Our vision is to bring the power of molecular diagnostics to every doctor’s office, thanks to our new pre-loaded PCR test kits that allow for simpler and faster sample preparation steps. In 2020 our devices have been used by more than 250 laypeople for the rapid detection of COVID-19 in a field study that we run at ETH Zürich, and our systems are currently being tested at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH).

Bone Mechanobiology in 3D Bioprinted In Vitro Tissue Models

  • ETH Zurich
  • Müller Group / Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics

Osteocytes are mechanosensory cells embedded in the bone matrix. Despite remarkable efforts, the reconstruction of functional 3D osteocyte networks in vitro has remained a major challenge. Here, we are developing 3D bioprinted bone in vitro models containing living osteocyte-like cells to study how these terminally differentiated human bone cells perceive and respond to microenvironmental cues and how this dynamic interplay contributes to bone mechanotransduction.

3D-Printed mini-Bone-Organs

  • ETH Zurich
  • Müller Group / Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics

Current tissue engineering strategies fail to recreate the complex bone architecture where a 3D bone cell network resides in the cavities for mechano-regulation of bone remodeling. This project aims to create a 3D printed in vitro model of bone for medicine.

Development of a Concept for Combining Optical Measurements with Acceleration Sensor Signals for Rail Roughness Measurements

  • ETH Zurich
  • Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing

The traveling velocity of Swiss pendolino reaching 250 km/h creates both aerodynamic noise as well as noise from the train wheel – track interaction. Rolling noise contributes significantly to the overall acoustic pollution, whereby correlation between track surface quality and noise emission could be detected and needs to be improved. Corrundum grinding wheels are widely used in industry for maintaining rail tracks and acoustic grinding. High velocity of the grinding train is the main challenge for in-situ measurements of the surface roughness and waviness. Laser triangulation sensors are used to measure the longitudinal profile of the rail surface. The measurement setup based on multiple laser triangulation sensors could be tested on the train. The measurement result is disturbed by a variety of external disturbances such as vibration on the train. To improve the measurement result, acceleration sensors are to be integrated into the structure in addition to the optical sensors. Concepts for the best possible combination of both sensor signals are to be investigated.

Human Organoid-on-Chip to Study Rare Bone Disease

  • ETH Zurich
  • Müller Group / Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics

To date, there is still very limited progress in developing organoid models for human musculoskeletal tissues such as bone. A major challenge is reconstructing the native bone microenvironment which is structurally and functionally complex. In this project, we leverage interdisciplinary advances in tissue engineering and microtechnologies to generate a microengineered bone-organoid-on-chip platform for both fundamental and translational research in medicine.
