Pressure ulcers are a critical healthcare challenge, leading to increased morbidity, extended hospital stays, and higher mortality rates. These injuries, caused by sustained pressure, friction, and shear forces, affect pa-tients across all demographics, with immobilized individuals being particularly vulnerable. Neonates are at high risk due to their immature and skin, with prevalence rates in neonatal intensive care units reaching up to 28%. This project implements findings from a literature review and a clinical trial and investigates the effect of material and environmental factors on interface pressure and friction. Laboratory tests will assess the influ-ence of various mattress surface topographies and bedsheet materials in friction and compression testing us-ing state-of-the-art skin models. - Biomechanical Engineering

We are seeking a candidate for a Ph.D. position aimed at advancing our understanding of how memories are interconnected and the mechanisms through which new information integrates with recently encoded memories. The goal is to elucidate the dynamic organization of memory throughout the lifespan, providing insights into fundamental cognitive functions. By investigating these processes, we aim to explore the broader implications for cognitive functions such as learning and decision-making.
Moreover, our research will examine how disruptions in these cognitive processes can increase susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders and contribute to maladaptive behaviors in animal models. Understanding these disruptions is essential for developing potential interventions and treatments for memory-related disorders. - Cellular Nervous System, Central Nervous System, Modeling and Simulation, Sensory Systems, Systems Biology and Networks

This project presents a novel breath sampler for controlled and reproducible VOC analysis in animals. Featuring pressure-triggered valves and CO2 monitoring, the device isolates end-tidal breath for reliable measurements. Validated using PTR-TOF-MS for acetone, the sampler reduces variability and supports compatibility with various gas sensors, offering a versatile tool for non-invasive livestock diagnostics. - Engineering and Technology

We aim to explore a range of cognitive impairments associated with various psychiatric and metabolic disorders in mice. Our goal is to identify the critical neural pathway connecting the hypothalamus to subcortical areas, which plays a key role in certain cognitive deficits. This project seeks not only to deepen our comprehension of the brain's intricate operations but also to lay the groundwork for precise therapeutic approaches. We will employ advanced technologies, including optogenetics, fiber photometry, and behavioral assessments, to achieve these objectives.

Large-scale polymer 3D printing offers unique geometric freedom and performance integration, enabling the creation of lightweight, sustainable, and functional facade systems. Within the existing research efforts of NCCR DFAB, this project focuses specifically on mechanical testing to compare different polymer materials for use in 3D-printed facade systems. The research evaluates mechanical properties such as bending, impact, and tensile strength to determine the most suitable materials for lightweight facade components. Comparisons are made based on how the materials meet mechanical performance requirements for functional facades. - Building
