Open Opportunities

Paid Internship of Computer Science MSc. - NVIDIA

  • University of Berne
  • Universitätsklinik für Neurochirurgie

We are looking for a highly motivated MSc student in computer science to help us developing a fully functional research prototype for Mueller polarimetric imaging (MPI) system to be employed on human tissues for surgical analyses, feedback and visualisations. The development will be supervised by PD Dr. Richard McKinley, in strong collaboration with the NVIDIA Holoscan Team. This is a unique internship opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and industry within a fully translational research project in collaboration with Inselspital and University of Bern.

Master thesis proposal: Polarimetric instrumentation for biomedical diagnosis of brain tissue

  • University of Berne
  • Universitätsklinik für Neurochirurgie

For this master thesis project we intend to address the important requirement for fast acquisition time by targeting a real-time system. For that, your main task will be to build a replica instrument based on an existing IMP system under the guidance of experts in polarimetry.

Enhancing Robotic Microsurgery Through Haptic Sensing

  • University of Berne
  • ARTORG Center

This project explores the integration of haptic feedback mechanisms into robotic microsurgery, focusing on neurosurgical applications. The aim is to enhance the surgeon’s ability to perceive tool-tissue interaction through telemanipulated systems. The work includes analyzing current sensing technologies, developing a hybrid hardware-software interface for haptic interaction, and evaluating the impact of tactile feedback on surgical performance in delicate environments.

Student projects on "Modeling the energy supply of the brain in health and disease"

  • University of Berne
  • Medizinische Fakultät

The key energy substrates of the brain are glucose and oxygen. Both are delivered to the brain via an intricate network of blood vessels. Recently, novel datasets resolving the entire vasculature of the mouse brain became available, which offer unique opportunities to study the brain’s energy supply. This requires developing and applying novel numerical methods to simulate blood flow and nutrient transport in large microvascular networks and the surrounding tissue. Besides looking at the healthy brain we are interested in pathologies like stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

Master thesis: Design and development of a partial Mueller matrix macroscope for visualization of brain tissue

  • University of Berne
  • Universitätsklinik für Neurochirurgie

For this master theses project, you will design the new partial polarimetric imaging system by targeting a simplified and real-time acquisition instrument. You will built and carry out the proof of concept of the new instrument using brain specimens. Finally, you will validate the partial polarimeter comparing results extracted from other IMP.

Master thesis: Image segmentation for neurosurgical intervention

  • University of Berne
  • Universitätsklinik für Neurochirurgie

In this project, the ideal candidate will have to adapt an existing deep learning codebase and fine-tune an image segmentation network based on semi-supervised learning to enhance tumor tissue detection.
