Multiphase Fluid Dynamics
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive clinical procedure used for the ablation of tumours and stones. It consists of precisely focusing ultrasound on a target site within the body to generate a cavitation bubble cloud which, under the acoustic excitation, oscillates and eventually collapses by releasing enough energy to erode neighbour tissues up to ablation. Because of an elusive comprehension of the cloud dynamics, optimal operating conditions are not well identified which results in strong side effects (e.g., haemorrhage or metastasis arise). In this context, extensive research efforts on the bubble cloud dynamics are crucial as HIFU stands out as a promising clinical procedure for multiple pathologies.

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization (ADV) of perfluorocarbon (PFC) droplets has shown promising results in generating in-situ microbubbles which can then be used for various biomedical applications such as contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging, blood brain barrier opening and targeted drug delivery. For this process, ease of acoustic vaporization and tunability in the acoustic thresholds required for vaporization of droplets is crucial for in-vivo applications. Endoskeletal droplets could help solve this issue as they have been shown to reduce the vaporization temperature of PFC. This project aims to use this known attribute of endoskeletal droplets to reduce and/or tune the acoustic thresholds required to acoustically vaporize PFC droplets.

Microbubble contrast agents and superheated nanodroplets for acoustic vaporization are nowadays collecting much interest due to their promising performance in medical applications such as ultrasound imaging and drug delivery. Both are usually coated with surfactants that affects their dynamical behavior and their surface/interfacial tension value, for which an accurate estimation is crucial. A pendant drop tensiometer is an instrument that can be exploited to effectively characterize the surface/interfacial properties of such emulsions.
