The innumerable uses of rope, including climbing, sailing, circus acts, and wrangling livestock, suggest that it could be used as an universal robotic manipulator. When combined with a mobile base, e.g. a cowboy on a horse, rope manipulation can be an effective tool for all manner of robot-environment interaction challenges. In this project, we seek to realize a control framework for ANYmal such that it can use a rope launcher to manipulate various objects.

| When quadrupedal animals injure their limbs, they adapt their gait to compensate for the injury. Conversely, when a quadruped robot’s leg breaks, its functionality is severely curbed, and in many cases, entirely compromised. | Floodplains are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Europe, but also some of the most threatened. Their high biodiversity is sustained by a high diversity of habitats and a tight coupling between riparian and aquatic ecosystems, through the exchange of ecological subsidies. Indeed, the riparian food web may be partially or fully reliant on the fluxes of emerging aquatic insects as a high-quality nutritional source. Further, the biomass and timing of emergence may strongly constrain the degree of cross-ecosystem coupling, yet these attributes may vary with local habitat conditions and thermal regimes. | Augmented Reality (AR) has great potential to enhance assembly tasks for different scenarios and for people with various backgrounds. However, recent studies suggest that AR can sometimes slow down assembly. Thus, further research on the efficiency of AR-assisted tasks is needed. | Approximately 1 out of 8 men worldwide will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) during their lifetime, making PCa the leading tumor type in male cancer patients. Localized PCa has a very high survival rate in patients. However, this survival rate sharply drops after the onset of metastasis, which is also the primary cause of mortality in PCa patients. Fascinatingly, in various tumor models, the primary tumor actively alters the microenvironment of distant organs beforehand, preparing a favorable niche for disseminated circulating tumor cells (CTCs) to graft and colonize with greater ease once they are in circulation. These hospitable microenvironments are termed pre-metastatic niches (PMNs) and are critical for overt metastasis formation. At present, PMN generation and its implications in PCa are poorly understood. Therefore, investigating how the PCa PMN unfolds will give us a deeper understanding of the biology of metastasis and lead to the discovery of novel drug targets essential for tailoring treatments for patients at higher risk of PCa metastasis and reducing tumor-related mortality.
Hence, in this project, students will aim to work on a series of in vivo experiments to help establish a preclinical model of metastasis formation in PCa. Primary work will include assistance with animal experiments (subcutaneous and intravenously injected tumors). Experience with extracellular vesicle isolation, Flow cytometry, PCRs, Simple Westerns, and CRISPR-CAS9 molecular editing will come with the project. - Biology, Medical and Health Sciences

| There are 300 known diseases that arise from haploinsufficiency (i.e. heterozygous mutations). A recent study reported that the number can be even higher (up to 3000 genes) that display signs of haploinsuffeciency (Collins et al, Cell, 2023). Why heterozygous mutations in some genes cause disease while others do not? Dosage compensation implies increased expression levels of the unaffected allele. In this project, we aim to investigate the extent to which dosage compensation occurs in respond to heterozygous mutations in mammalian systems using high throughput CRISPR screens coupled to single cell RNA sequencing. The project will also aim to investigate the role of the recently discovered Transcriptional Adaptation phenomenon (El-Brolosy et al, Nature, 2019) on dosage compensation, in addition to exploring therapeutic strategies for haploinsufficiency disorders that aim to enhance dosage compensation - Animal Physiology-Cell, Animal Physiology-Systems, Cell Physiology, Databases and Ontologies, Gene Expression, Gene Therapy, Genetic Development (incl. | Moldable hydrogels found increasing popularity and have been used as injectable or extrudable materials in biomedical and industrial applications. This is mainly due to their ability to flow under applied stress (shear-thin) and reform a stable network (self-heal). To modify the mechanical properties of the dynamic polymer networks, nanoparticles can be added, which additionally can broaden the scope of their applications. The so-called polymer–nanoparticle (PNP) hydrogels represent a unique, tunable and versatile class of dynamic nanocomposite materials that form via reversible interactions between polymer chains and nanoparticles.
