Photoresponsive slide-ring hydrogels for on-demand modulation of mechanical properties

Hydrogel materials are crosslinked polymer networks with reversible swelling, tunable porosity, elasticity, toughness, and flexibility. Conventional hydrogels often suffer from weak mechanical properties and display brittle and unstable behaviour limiting their scope for load-bearing applications. Such networks consist of side-chain functionalized polymers, whose covalent crosslinks occur at fixed positions on the polymer backbone (Figure 1A). Upon deformation, tensile stress is concentrated on the closest neighboring crosslinks, eventually leading to their rupture and material failure. Hence, the molecular design of high-performance hydrogels with toughness and elasticity similar to rubber is an emerging area of research in the engineering of polymeric materials with applications towards robust medical materials or soft robotics.

InSight – an automated 3D cancer detection platform

Histopathological approaches have remained the same for the past 200 years despite the limitations resulting in detrimental implications: (i) The specimen preparation (cutting to prepare thin tissue slices) is extremely laborious. (ii) Due to the laborious work, only 2% of the tissue sample is prepared and analyzed in 2D. (iii) The low sample amount and the generated 2D images limit the extractable information. These limitations culminate in a false negative cancer detection rate of up to 28%. Failure to detect up to 28% of cancer cells is unacceptable. By combining technology from biomedicine, mechanical engineering, and food science, we have developed a game changing interdisciplinary solution that mitigates the bottlenecks associated with 3D tissue sample preparation, enabling the generation of spatial images within 2 days.

Microstructure modification in additive manufactured Al alloy

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of metals is a process where three dimensional parts are manufactured by sequentially spreading thin layers of metal powder feedstock and melting portions with a laser. The process involves high cooling rates (up to 106 K/s) which lead to a very peculiar microstructure characterized by a bimodal grain size distribution. Fine grains areas are clearly visible in some regios, identified as the meltpool boundaries, however columnar and elongated grains are present in other areas of the sample. Depending on the final application, one microstructure is preferable over the other, therefore the understanding of how it is formed and control its evolution is extremely relevant for industrial applications.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of metals is a process where three dimensional parts are manufactured by sequentially spreading thin layers of metal powder feedstock and melting portions with a laser. Byproducts of the process, such as fume and spatter, originated by the dynamics of the melt pool, can fall onto the powder bed or interact with the laser and potentially cause material defects in the parts. In this project, the student will conduct experimental builds and investigate to what extend the byproducts generation impact on the process robustness.

Consensus Pruning for Translation Averaging
